The optical system includes a tungsten filament lamp, lenses and apertures to focus the light, a 90° detector, a forward scattered light detector and a second one for backscattered light, and a transmitted light detector. The instrument can measure turbidity at less than 40 NTU using the 90° scattered light detector or at 4,000 NTU using all detectors (ratio measurement). When ratio measurement is enabled, the instrument's microprocessor applies a mathematical calculation to evaluate the ratio of the signals from each detector. The advantages of enabling this feature are excellent linearity, calibration stability, and the ability to measure turbidity in the presence of color.
